Children’s National accepted transfer of nearly 12 acres of land on the former Walter Reed Army Medical Center from the United States Army. The long-term vision for the site is to create a world class children’s medical research campus while providing opportunity for growth and expansion of Children’s National research and outpatient care. Children’s National engaged Redgate to act as Project Manager and augment their existing staff for this two-phase project.
Phase 1 of the Children’s National at Walter Reed project involved the renovation of three historic buildings totaling 210,000 SF, as well as an above-ground parking structure. Phase 1 includes:
- Pediatric and Adolescent Primary Care and Genetics Services
- Children’s Research Institute
- 300+ seat auditorium/theatre
- 1,100 space above-ground parking garage
Phase 2 will complete the renovation of the 348,000 SF iconic former Walter Reed Armed Forces Institute of Pathology, and future phases will bring 650,000 SF of new construction including research, lab facilities, a conference center, and residential uses.
